Learning Spanish Like Crazy

Whatever your reasons are, if you’ve decided to learn to speak Spanish fluently it’s likely that you want to learn it really quickly – it’s likely that you want to be learning Spanish like crazy. It’s absolutely not true that it has to take years to learn a language. If you put enough effort into your endeavors, you really can learn Spanish like crazy.

The best way to speed up the language learning process is total immersion. Of course, it isn’t always possible to pick up and move to a Spanish-speaking environment, but you can always start small. You can read Spanish language newspapers or magazine articles – you can even find these online. Ultimately, the more you practice actually speaking the language, the faster you will catch on, but reading in Spanish will clue you in to the grammatical structure of the language.

You can also begin the immersion process by visiting places where Spanish is spoken, and since you may not be able to fund a trip to Argentina, look for bars or similar hangouts where Spanish speakers may be found. You may be surprised at how willing people are to speak Spanish with you, no matter what your skill level. Conversation is an extremely important part of the language learning process, and once you begin to incorporate regular Spanish conversations into your regime, you will find that you really are learning Spanish like crazy. Speaking the language aloud helps the student to retain the lessons they study.

Another aspect of learning Spanish like crazy and of immersion is listening to the language spoken aloud. If you don’t want to purchase Spanish audio tapes, you can obtain them from any library. There are also a number of podcasts that teach Spanish, which can be accessed through iTunes for free. Podcasts are already in MP3 form, and can be uploaded to any MP3 player. Once your Spanish lessons have been uploaded to your portable player, you can listen to them anywhere, at your convenience. This is especially handy if you don’t have a lot of time to devote to your lessons, because you can listen to them during activities you’d do anyway, like exercising at the gym or driving home from work.

A handy studying technique is to make flashcards of vocabulary and Spanish phrases. You don’t need a how-to on how to construct these, obviously, but it’s a good idea to pick a number (say, 25-30 flashcards) to make a goal for each week. Carry them around with you, and when you find yourself in a long queue, on public transportation, or waiting around for your oil to be changed, take them out and do a little bit of studying rather than just sitting idly. The repetition of flashcards is a great way to establish retention of Spanish vocabulary, and then you can use these words when you practice your conversational skills.

So if you’re really up for learning Spanish like crazy, incorporate all of these ideas into your daily routine as much as possible and you’ll see yourself improving day to day. With a bit of discipline, these techniques will really push you to achieve your goals.
