Spanish Grammar Exercises

Learning proper grammar in Spanish is important. However, it is also important that just strictly doing Spanish grammar exercises will not make you a good Spanish speaker. A good example is to think about how you learned your native language as a child.

When you were a child learning to speak, grammar wasn’t the most important thing. You first started out by learning simple words. Your parents would point to something and say the word.

Once you were able to speak, you would imitate what they said. Your early speaking days were spent putting single words together. You may hear a child say something like “Baby hungry now.”

The most important thing was to learn and use vocabulary words correctly. Once you had that mastered, then you slowly learned how to form sentences using grammar. Your parents or teachers were likely to correct you if you weren’t conjugating your verbs or correctly using pronouns.

As a child if you learned grammar first, you probably wouldn’t be able to speak very well. You would know grammar rules but you wouldn’t know any vocabulary. Knowing grammar wouldn’t do you much good.

This is the same with learning Spanish. You should learn some fundamentals first. You should learn the alphabet and some vocabulary words. Once you learn these things, then you can build up to more complex subjects such as grammar. By doing Spanish grammar exercises, you’ll learn your grammar easier and more quickly.
