So now that you’ve decided you’re going to go ahead and start studying Spanish, where do you begin? It all depends on the level of expertise – if you have never studied the language before, then you must start at the beginning, and with the basics. Indeed, even if you have established the basic building blocks of grammar, it’s a good idea to go over them before moving forward, especially if it’s been a while since your last lesson. In order to move forward in your language learning, you must practice what you’ve been learning through exercises and conversation. It’s also important to focus on learning new words all the time.

Obviously a language can’t be learned without mastering the basics of grammar, and Spanish is no exception. Before you start studying Spanish, consider your level of expertise. If you can’t tell your verbs from your prepositions, then you absolutely must start at the beginning, no matter how badly you want to skip ahead to more difficult material. If you’ve taken your share of Spanish lessons but haven’t considered the language in a while, it’s best that you review the basics so that they are fresh in your mind before you advance on to bigger and better things.

As you start studying Spanish and advance in your grammar in vocabulary lessons, it’s important to practice what you have learned by incorporating this new knowledge into conversations. Language is used for communications – so take what you’ve learned and attempt to do just that. You’ll find that the more you practice, the more naturally the language will come to you. Speaking Spanish to others will reinforce your knowledge and build your confidence, because it’s not always easy to put yourself out there and speak a foreign language. You’ll also be surprised at how much speaking to another person will add to your Spanish language experience. You will pick up new idioms as well as expand your vocabulary just by practicing what you already know.
It’s important when you start studying Spanish that you not only practice, but try to expand your knowledge on a daily basis. What a student can cover on a daily basis will vary, depending on how much information each student can retain as well as how much time is available to devote to studies, but it’s best to try to converse in the language for at least a half hour every day. Even after you become fluent in Spanish, you still won’t know everything, so there will most likely always be room for improvement (just imagine knowing every word there is to know in English!).

To start studying Spanish, all a student really needs to do is start at the beginning. You can learn the basics of the language from college courses, software programs that are designed to teach the language, or through websites that offer free Spanish lessons. With all of these options, the student will get out what he or she puts in. You can memorize all the vocabulary in the world, but without practice, the knowledge can’t be transformed into fluency.
